Astorga to Rabanal del Camino

Left Astorga at about 8:00 am and started the ascent into the highest point on the Camino (we will not get there until tomorrow). We passed through several small villages as we ascended about 1,000 feet. The terrain started to change as we leave the Meseta behind (thank God). As you can see from one of the photos there is still snow on some points in the mountain we will cross tomorrow. Ben and I (mostly me) are still getting over the stomach virus so we didn't eat much today. Nothing seemed appealing. So we lived off of Coke and ice cream. We walked about 13 miles today and although we were both exhausted we got our walking legs back. Found a small Casa Rural in town and took a couple hour nap before showering and then getting something to eat. Found a nice restaurant that served a pilgrims menu and had a nive dinner. Spent a couple hours chatting with an American from Washington DC who is taking 6 months to walk the Camino and then see how many continents he can visit before November. He is walking with a Spaniard from Madrid he met 8 days ago in the Messta. Both were a lot of fun. Tomorrow Ben gets to drop his rocks at the iron cross.

  1. So sorry that you guys got so sick. Sure looks like much nicer scenery now. Just think how easy it will be the next time you do this!
