Burgos to Castrojeriz
We rented our bikes this morning in Burgos. The shop did not open until 9 am so we did not get on the road until a little after 10 am. The ride out of Burgos was long since it is a pretty big city. We traveled through the towns of Tardajus (population 700), Rabe de las Calzadas (population 100), Hornillos del Camino (population 87), Arroyo San Bol (population 20), Hontanas (population 35), San Anton (population 20) and finally to Castrojeriz (population 1100....big city). The Metesa is exactly as described, miles and miles of wheat fields, no shade and HOT! I said before I would regret wishing for warm weather. I do now. It must have been in the mid-90's when rolled into Castrojeiz at about 4. Most of the Albugues were already filled as people stop early to get out of the heat. Found a small hotel and stayed. We traveled 26 miles today and did in one day what would normally take 2 days to walk. Tomorrow we need to go 40 miles which would be 3 days walking. Today we discovered biking is just as hard as walking but we have different muscles that ache. We are both exhausted but at least Ben's blisters are getting a rest. We saw Stevie in Hornillos del Camino at about 12:30 and we had been walking since 6 am (before daybreak). It only took us 2 hours by bike. We should cut off 5 days getting to Leon. Not to bore you, I also posted more pictures from the Burgos Cathedral. It is unbelievable the architecture, sculputures and paintings in the Cathedral. All dating from the 1200's to the 1600's. In the US this would all be in the Smithsonian.
